Covid-19: Daily deaths cross 50 after 5 weeks, infections top 3,000

54 fatalities and 3,050 cases in a day as pandemic worsens

Bangladesh on Sunday recorded 54 deaths from Covid-19, the highest single-day death toll reported in the country in 35 days.

The last time Bangladesh recorded more deaths from Covid-19 was on May 9, when 56 people died from the disease.

A total of 3,050 people tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday, amounting to a daily infection rate of 14.80%. Previously, daily infection was recorded over 3,000 on April 27 when 3,031 people tested positive for Covid-19. 

As many as 20,602 samples, including pending ones, were tested at 512 authorized labs across the country between 8am Sunday and 8am Monday.

The overall death toll in the country now stands at 13,172, while the total number of confirmed cases has risen to 829,972 with an overall infection rate of 13.40%.

Border districts continued to show an upward trend in coronavirus cases, with the infection rate higher than 40% in some of the districts

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Monday afternoon.

Of the 54 deceased – 39 men and 15 women – 14 were from Chittagong, 13 each from Dhaka and Rajshahi, seven from Khulna, five from Rangpur, and one each from Barisal and Mymensingh divisions.

Among them, 40 patients died in government hospitals, 10 in private hospitals, and four at home. 

A total 27 of the deceased were aged over 60, 14 between 51 and 60, six between 41 and 50, five between 31 and 40, one between 21 and 30, and one between 11 and 20.

So far, 9,477 men (71.95%) and 3,695 women (28.05%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.

Since the arrival of the pandemic in Bangladesh, 7,307 people have died in Dhaka division, 2,532 in Chittagong, 792 in Rajshahi, 874 in Khulna, 395 in Barisal, 485 in Sylhet, 526 in Rangpur, and 271 in Mymensingh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.59%.

Health authorities said 2,564 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours. So far, 768,830 patients – 92.63% – have made full recoveries across the country.

Currently, 25,193 people are in isolation and 47,438 are quarantined.

Infection rate over 40% in some border districts

The Covid-19 infection rate continued to show an upward trend in the border districts of Khulna, Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions on Sunday, with the infection rate over 40% in some of the districts.

In Bagerhat district of Khulna division, the infection rate was 44.9% on Sunday. In Satkhira, the positivity rate stood at 47.3%.

The infection rate was 41.3% in Chuadanga, 39.1% in Jessore , 33.8% in Jhenaidah, 34.2% in Khulna, 40.9% in Narail, and 36.7% in Kushtia districts.

Dr Md Abdul Mannan, superintendent (in-charge) of Kushtia 250 bed General Hospital in Kushtia Sadar, told Dhaka Tribune on Sunday that 147 Covid-19 patients have been admitted to the hospital in just the first 12 days of June, as compared to 104 in all of May and 136 in all of April.

Only 47 Covid-19 patients were admitted to the hospital in March.

In Rangpur’s Thakurgaon district, the infection rate stood at 33.8% on Sunday. In Kurigram, it was 45.1%.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 3,820,908 lives and infected 176,785,779 people across the world till Monday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 160,848,623 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 219 countries and territories across the planet.
