Covid-19: Bangladesh reports 187 new deaths, 3,697 new cases in 24 hours

Single-day positivity rate rises above 32% across the country

The health authorities have reported 187 new deaths due to Covid-19 and 3,697 fresh cases of infection at the staggering infection rate of 32.19% across Bangladesh, indicating that the second wave of the pandemic is far from slowing down in the country.

With the latest numbers, the nationwide death toll of the pandemic now stands at 18,685, while the caseload stands at over 1.14 million, according to the daily Covid-19 bulletin issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday afternoon.

The number of tests done has been fewer than usual due to the Eid holidays. In the 24 hours between Wednesday and Thursday mornings, 11,486 samples were tested across the country. 

Among the new deceased, two persons were over the age of 91, while eight people were in the 81-90 age group, 27 in the 71-80 group, 64 in the 61-70 group, 49 in the 51-60 group, 12 in the 41-50 group, 20 in the 31-40 group, four in the 21-30 group, and one in the 11-20 age group.

Dhaka division reported the highest 75 deaths, Khulna 44, Chittagong 23, Rangpur 15, Rajshahi 10, Barisal 11, Sylhet four, and Mymensingh five.

Among the newly detected cases, the highest 1,253 were reported in the Dhaka division, followed by 1,388 in Chittagong, 213 in Khulna, 115 in Sylhet, 202 in Rangpur, 402 in Rajshahi, 149 in Barisal, and 75 in Mymensingh.

On the other hand, 8,566 people recovered from Covid-19 in the 24 hours to Thursday morning, taking the total number of recoveries in the country to 969,610.
