Protests in Sylhet over failure to get vaccinated

Oxygen plant being set up in Sylhet, says foreign minister

Like the rest of the country, the mass immunization program got underway in Sylhet from Saturday.

People were seen crowding at the vaccination centres, but many were unable to get vaccinated due to a lack of vaccines or vaccination cards, which led to protests at a few places.

According to the Sylhet Health Services Division, a total of 235,500 people were vaccinated on the first day of the mass vaccination program.

Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) sources said that on the first day, there were huge crowds of vaccination seekers at 81 centres of the city.

Locals in Sylhet protested against being denied vaccines after standing in queues for hours at the Kishorimohon Girls High School vaccination centre in ward 16. At the time no health guidelines were maintained.

Kamal Hossain, a resident of Jail Road area of the city, said he had come to the vaccination center at 8:30am. At around 12:30pm the vaccination cards had run out.

Tania Begum, who came to get vaccinated with her child in her lap, said: “I came here at 9am to get vaccinated. But after we have been standing in a queue for a long time, we are now being told that there are no more vaccination cards. I will not be able to get vaccinated today [Saturday}.”

Ward 16 Councilor Abdul Muhith Jabed said the ward had been given 300 doses of vaccine from SCC on Saturday. Vaccines and vaccination cards are being given accordingly. It is not possible to give more than that.

"Those who did not receive the vaccine on Saturday should not get upset," he said. They will be able to get vaccinated from this centre on Sunday and Monday. However, those who will come first will get the vaccine.

Protesters have questioned that if only 300 people were to be vaccinated on Saturday, then why did the authorities not close the doors after letting only 300 people enter the centre?

Why were the others kept waiting in a queue for hours, complained the protestors.

Foreign minister inaugurates campaign

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen virtually inaugurated the “National Covid-19 Vaccination Campaign” in the Sylhet City Corporation area at Red Crescent Maternity Hospital at 9am on Saturday.

The minister said there was no shortage of vaccines now. Two million more doses of the Sinopharm vaccine will arrive from China this week. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will provide free coronavirus vaccines to all citizens of the country.

Minister Momen added that the government had taken an initiative to set up an oxygen plant to solve the oxygen crisis in Sylhet.

“I am working tirelessly towards that goal. And if it is successful, then 450 more beds can be added to Sylhet Osmani Hospital for Covid-19 treatment,” added the foreign minister.
