Locals claim to have been celebrating the fair since the British era

The nearly 200-year-old traditional three-day long "Jamai Mela" (fair for sons-in-law) has been celebrated with great splendour in Jamalpur Sadar upazila.

The main segment of the fair typically begins on the first day of the last month of the Bangali calendar, Chaitra, and ends on the third.

In this case, the fair took place in Ghoradhap union's Gopalpur Bazar in the upazila, which commenced on Saturday and ended on Monday.

Stalls that sell household necessities such as crockery, furniture and furnishings were set up at the fair, causing it to extend up to 15 days.

Many sweets vendors have been selling different kinds of sweets such as chamcham, shondesh, batasha, golla and many more. Apart from this, various other traders sell toys for children, clothes, crafts, hand fans and an assortment of products, along with vegetables, fruit, fish and meat.

As per tradition, all the sons-in-law in the area, and also of adjacent villages, are invited along with their wives, to their in-law's house for the occasion. This fair is a great opportunity for locals to pass these days amid festivities and enjoyment.

According to Ghoradhap union Chairman Din Amin, Fair Committee President and Ghoradhap union's General Secretary Matiur Rahman, and many others, the fair had been celebrated by the Hindu community of the area since the British era.

Now the Gopalpur Mela is open to all members of the public, irrespective of their race, religion or caste.
