Honour not the extravagance, but the essence
Valentine’s Day is on the horizon, and instead of rejoicing it, you are nervous. May be a little irritated, too. It depends on your relationship status. And we don’t blame you. Over the years, the hype around Valentine’s Day has been inflated and blown so out of proportion that with every passing year, meeting the heightened expectations of your significant other seems a little more difficult. If you’re single, the challenge is different. You see glorifications of the day on social media and everywhere else imaginable. You hear everyone talking about it, and there is nowhere you can possibly go for some solace. It doesn’t have to be like this, though. After all, what is the day really about in the first place? Valentine’s Day is essentially about celebrating the special feeling of love and affection that you have for your special someone. If you are in a relationship and stressing about what to buy your other half, or if you’re anticipating that ‘surprise’ your partner has planned for you - the level of surprise having the potential to make or break your day – you’re doing it wrong. Valentine’s Day is about holding your partner’s hand, looking into his/her eyes, and telling them how special they are to you, how much you admire and appreciate them, how they have had a profound impact in your life, and how much you cherish it. It is about honouring the special bond that you share – a bond that kept you together till now, and a bond that is going to keep you together for the years to come. Valentine’s Day provides an opportunity to seek forgiveness from your partner if you have ever wronged them, even if you are already forgiven, and promising them that you will try to be a better person and a partner to them every single day. This does not necessarily have to be over dinner at an expensive restaurant, or through a costly gift. These are all good, but making them an obligation for you and your partner because that’s what the electronic, print, and social media told you so or that’s what ‘everyone else’ is doing threatens to spoil the essence of the day. What if you are single, and none of the words said so far apply to you this Valentine’s? Actually, the day brings you a whole world of opportunities. Valentine’s Day is about celebrating the love that you have for your special one, and you don’t have a special someone this year. But what about the other special people in your life? I’m talking about your friends and family, who have been there for you through thick and thin. When is the last time you have gone up to them and told them what they mean to you? If you can’t remember, use this day to tell them. Yes, may be they know already. But you must have realized by now that you can take nothing for granted in your life, and gratefulness and appreciation every now and then is essential to nurture the bond you share with the special people in your life. Do not forget to take care of and pamper yourself a bit as well. Often, dealing with the hassles of daily life, and giving attention to the people we meet and think about everyday, we often forget to keep track of our own feelings. Valentine’s Day will be a good time to celebrate yourself – rejoice the successes you’ve achieved, forgive yourself for your mistakes, accept the person that you are, pat yourself on the back, and start fresh again – being a better and wiser you. Valentine’s Day brings with it the message of love. Honour the message, regardless of whether you are committed or single, with the special people in your life who you love.
