The second week

Now that you've adapted to the new routine, what's next?

With the second week of Ramadan well under way, all of us have more or less gotten into the swing of things. By now, you may have mastered juggling obligations at home and work, besides creating a space for some spiritual experience.

So now, it's time for you to know what you're eating for sehri and iftar, get your group iftars planned out, catch up on your reading, go for some Eid shopping and do a bunch of other things that you missed out on during the first week.

Eat healthy

Ramadan is a great opportunity to break the chain of bad eating habits. The diet should be a simple meal – not a feast – and should not differ much from our regular diet. Our sehri should contain a wholesome meal that provides long-lasting energy throughout the day. Don't forget the all-important fluids – like water and fresh fruit juices – which should replace caffeinated drinks.

Also, breaking the fast with dates and water is important. This helps restore our sugar and salt levels and also hydrates the body.

Control your cravings

Even after a whole day of fasting, you must ensure that you do not overeat during iftar. Practice the habit of controlling your cravings. Go for boiled and sautéed food rather than fried and roasted dishes for a healthier meal.

Host a homely iftar

There is nothing better than breaking your fast with a group of close friends and beloved family members. While hosting an iftar at home, setting the table is of utmost importance. It makes your guests feel special and the meal looks all the more tantalizing after the day’s fast.

Decorate your table with fresh flowers – they give off great energy. When planning an iftar menu, ensure that you serve lighter dishes along with the heavier items. Include salads and yoghurt based curries along with those haleems and cholas.

Make a travel schedule

Those of you who will be travelling to your loved ones living in distant places from the cities during Eid can make this journey hassle-free by going for low-risk travelling options like trains. However, even that can be a daunting experience as getting tickets during the last days of Ramadan may seem almost impossible. Or even if you do manage to get them, it may prove to be very costly.

So plan ahead. Book your tickets this week so that you can avoid all the trouble later!

Squeeze in some Eid shopping

Planning in advance in the second week will help you accomplish all of those tasks that you may have wanted to do in time for the end of Ramadan or Eid last year, but could not.

You may have wanted to buy Eid gifts for family and friends last year, but were too busy during the last week of Ramadan. So this year, decide to go in the earlier week instead. Also, place your order at the tailor's place ahead of the busy schedule that you will surely face during the last week. Shops offering ready-made attires may run out of stock at the end of Ramadan, so do your shopping early.

Catch up on your reading

No matter how busy you get during the month, pick a book to read – be it religious, spiritual or simply soulful – and make a mental note of finishing it by the end of this month. This will help you focus when the need arises along with providing the relaxation for your mind and soul.
