ULAB to organize creative writing certificate course

The Department of English and Humanities at University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh is organizing a Creative Writing Certificate Course. The course will run from June 29 to July 14, 2018. 

The three-week workshop offers aspiring fiction writers, poets and translators an opportunity for improving their crafts through sessions to be conducted by distinguished writers working in fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry and drama.  

In order to gain hands-on writing experience, participants will delve into interactive sessions conducted by Syed Manzoorul Islam, Fakrul Alam, Kaiser Haq, Niaz Zaman, Azfar Hussain, Kazi Anis Ahmed, Razia Sultana Khan, Shamsad Mortuza and Nausheen Eusuf, among others. Selected works by the participants will be published by ULAB in a planned anthology. 

The workshop is designed and tailored to inspire, cultivate and mould raw talent into producing quality literary works. 

Stressing the importance of a creative writing workshop, which can significantly improve a writer’s literary skill, Kaiser Haq says, “They say writers are born, not made. Perhaps it will be truer to say some, or maybe many, are born with literary potential. That potential needs to be realized, and a good creative writing program or course or workshop can help. We cannot create talent but we can nurture it by teaching the various techniques of writing and self-editing. We can tell the aspiring writer about the market and how to enter it, and we can discuss and give advice on good writerly habits. There are other, subtler ways in which interaction with the instructors and fellow workshop participants can help one discover one’s true writerly self.”
