Break out of blah

Upgrade your style this festive season

In 2019, there’s really no excuse for men to pretend they don’t care about fashion. With a plethora of fast-fashion options in the market, some seriously incredible menswear designers to fulfill all your bespoke needs, and celebs like Ranveer Kapoor turning up on all the ads here and pushing the envelope and throwing the gauntlet, you’ve got your work cut out for you. While trends might get exhausting to keep up with and make you feel self-conscious, there are some classic moves you can make to get yourself out of a fashion rut and send some positive style karma out into your surroundings. This festive season, here are three things to try.

Just add colour

If you’ve always been conservative about the hues you sport, the good news is, there’s no time like Boishakh to break out the other crayons in the box. A well-fitted panjabi in a solid wash of colour will turn heads without raising eyebrows, and this is an investment outfit that will last you through the summer, and make you feel right at home at dawats.

For your regular wear, it’s always a good idea to start small. Build on the base colours you’re comfortable wearing — blacks, greys, navy blues — but bring in bright pops in small doses. This could be a blink-and-you-miss it colourful lining under your blazer or koti, a bright pocket square or even a funky pair of socks.

Play with prints

Another way to perk up your wardrobe is to incorporate patterns in exciting ways. Sure, you have your striped office shirts, you say, but you could be doing so much more with your prints. You can go to work in a monochrome outfit where each piece has a vastly different print. We’re talking putting paisley cuffs on a polka dot shirt or panjabi, or pairing a floral polo with chequered pants. You could get your pattern game on this April by pairing a subtle panjabi with bold printed slacks.

Talking texture

Style should ideally engage all the senses, so while you’re considering the visual elements of your look, don’t forget to let the tactile aspects work for you. We’re talking combining textures to create an outfit that is pleasing to the touch as well as a treat for the eyes.

This season should give you the perfect excuse to play with local textiles. From short kurtas made from gamcha fabric, to upscale bombers made from jamdani, look for unexpected ways to make a nod to our culture while still keeping your look cosmopolitan.

This season, break out of the blahs by experimenting. Pay attention to fit and ease of movement, and all your bold experiments will pay off.
