Shania’s Sweets bring to you homemade dessert goodness

At the age of 10, a little girl named Shania Abedin found herself mostly indulging in the culinary art of sweets. Baking was a hobby she grew very fond of. On any given day, she would be trying out a new cake recipe. At the age of 16, she finally learnt to correct proportions of the ingredients she was putting in. Gradually, this hobby turned into a passion. Now, at the age of 20, she has mastered the art of cakes. Her repertoire of treats is extensive. Under the name Shanai’s Sweets on Instagram, she showcased all her desserts for order placements in January.

Fine tuning her craft through trial and error, Shania consistently kept trying to make the most palatable desserts with fine details. Mango coconut cheesecake, almond roulade, Braso de Mercedes, profiteroles, lemon and berries entremet, pavlova nests, salted caramel petite four, melted madness petite four, churro bombs, cannolis, jiggly cheesecake and the list of exceptionally exquisite desserts Shania has brought for the Bangladeshi online market goes on.

The bakery as a business happened quite by chance. To keep the uncountable number of pictures organized, Shania uploaded theShaina Abedinm on her public account. The venture began on one fine day, at the beginning of 2019, when someone commented on one of those pictures, asking for the price of the profiteroles. Surprised and excited at the same time, Shania delivered it to her first client. She would upload the pictures of the new desserts she was making and every time she would receive an order. Then on August 25, she received her biggest order. She had to make 100 pieces of the selected desserts for a welcome event. 15 hours of pouring her hard work and dedication was all worth it as she received a very positive response from the guests at the event.

Shania comes from a family where she is expected to run her family’s business. Currently studying International Business at Drexel University, she dreams to earn a diploma from a pastry school after she graduates. Shania’s Sweets has given her the exposure to create her own identity. Besides helping her father with the business, she aims to stick to her passionate dream. Although her family was initially confused about the whole idea of making business out of baking, they eventually started supporting her. Her mother has been her biggest critic when it comes to flavours. Her siblings, on the other hand, have worked tirelessly to help her with the branding and packaging.

Ever since her childhood, Shania got to visit several counties. Each countryhas its unique flavour of desserts. Fusion, as she mentioned, is her favourite. She wants to bring a diverse range of desserts for her clients as well. From Filipino to Japanese desserts, Shania tries to bring something new on the plate, every time. Speaking of fusion, the Avenue T team asked Shania if the clients always understand or appreciate the varying tastes. In this regards she says: “It’s a hit or miss.”

Shania tries to provide the best flavour with the best quality. To meet her clients’ expectations (except the local flour and the dairy from her family’s firm), from sheets to chocolates to essence, Shania imports everything. If you’re traveling abroad and have a huge suitcase of clothes, in Shania’s case it’s always the bakery items.

The self-taught pastry chef has reached this position only with the consistent practice of watching YouTube and Tasty videos. However, Shania mentions that for three long years she made hard attempts to make the perfect profiteroles. With the simple guidance from Cupcake Jemma’s videos, Shania was finally able to master making profiteroles.

Shania hopes to make a physical store of her own that can be a part of international chain as well. Along with that, she also wants to open a proper culinary school here after she has pursued a diploma on her own.
