Men’s organic skin and hair care

Beard Society of Bangladesh is a community of bearded men founded by two bearded brothers - Shahbaz Lohan and Syed Md Farhan -- on January 05, 2016. This is the first and the only community of bearded men in Bangladesh.

“We started this community to bring all the bearded people together and influence others in starting a trend. Another main reason was to get rid of the stereotypical belief -- beard promotes terrorism -- Abraham Lincon grew a beard. It has nothing to do with religion, it’s a lifestyle choice” said Lohan.

Upon starting the community, many members faced issues like beard fall, dandruff, etc. While suggesting different international beard care products to community members, Lohan and Farhan thought -- why not start selling beard care products?

“Bangladesh’s cosmetics products aren’t up to the mark. Branded products are being made in factories of Puran Dhaka. We didn’t want people to use adulterated products. So, we started researching and sampling quality beard products. Focusing on the environmental facts, we came up with a mixture of skin-friendly organic ingredients that have no side effects,” said Shahbaz Lohan, Founder, Beard Society of Bangladesh.

That’s how they started their own company focusing on men’s facial hair care products. In February 2017, Beard Society of Bangladesh launched its first product -- Beard Oil. Two months later, they launched their second product, the Beard Balm. Their third product, Hair Therapy, was launched at the beginning of this month.

Their products are organic; The ingredients are sourced from France and South Africa and the products are packaged in Bangladesh to minimize costs.

Beard Oil

This oil is good for the beard’s health and it can recover disproportionate beard growth. It also helps to keep the skin hydrated and tame the hair. It’s better to use beard oil during the day.

Beard Balm

The balm gives a shape to your beard. It helps to reduce beard flakes and itchiness. Both the oil and the balm work as a styling-agent. It’s better to use beard balm at night. The ingredients of beard balm provide nutrition needed for the nourishment of the beard follicles that comes from the beard oil.

Hair therapy

Products like hair gel and hair wax are widely available in Bangladesh but these products damage hair follicles resulting in hair fall and itchiness. These are common issues that one has to face while styling his hair.

“With our hair therapy, you can do whatever style you want with no damage to your hair and at the same time, it will provide extra care and nourishment to your hair scalp and follicles,” said Lohan.

Things to do

Look out for counterfeits

There are some products available in the market which can be purchased for lower prices. After using such products, many people have faced problems like - pimples, skin rash, and beard fall. Lohan says “some of our customers have queries regarding our prices -- it is not possible to sell a mixture of such ingredients at a price similar to the counterfeits”.

Do not rely on Minoxidil

Minoxidil is a chemical substance used to treat hair loss. It can also be used to grow facial hair but the chemical can have adverse effects. Itchiness, dryness, skin irritation or a slight burning sensation are some common symptoms that can be seen upon application.

“Minoxidil can not help you to grow healthy hair. Dermatologists refer it for hair fall but people use it on their face for beards and that causes skin problems,” said Lohan.

So, what are your future plans?

“We are going to extend our line of products within 2020. Upcoming products will include -- beard conditioner, beard serum, onion hair oil, and a beard comb.”

Are you doing anything for No-Shave November this time?

“We are planning to launch an anti-bullying campaign -- ‘Bully The Bullies’. We are currently looking for sponsors for the campaign.”

“Alongside, we are planning to do a beard exhibition where we plan on portraying people who have a top-notch beard.”

“We are also working on launching a virtual guidebook for men’s skincare and hair care.”

Why do you prefer having a beard?

“In simple words, it represents my freedom. I like individualism and individualism is freedom. Beard is an extension of myself -- I like my beard -- this is who I am right now,” said Ashiq Un Nabi, Brand Ambassador, Beard Society of Bangladesh.

“I was the first one in school to grow a beard and all the teachers would keep bugging me to shave. Then I decided to somehow pass that phase, in a sense, I was bullied for this. Since college, I decided not to shave it anymore,” informed Syed Md Farhan, Co-Founder, Beard Society of Bangladesh.

Coming year, Beard Society of Bangladesh is going to work on some social awareness campaigns and the best part is Shayonto Shaker Muhib aka Bhedaimma is joining the Beard Society of Bangladesh as their Spokesperson.
