5 trends to try this wedding season

The world continues to get more complicated, and fashion, which appropriates, provides a visual narrative of the current mood. The Winter Wedding 19/20 season, therefore draws from a diverse palette of inspirations to give a wide range of distinctive looks to choose from. Whether you’re getting married this season, or attending a round of ‘dos, here are five trends to explore.

Flapper fever

The 1920’s remain a fashion decade synonymous with high style, high stakes, and rebel flair. The aesthetic sensibilities have inspired artists and designers over the past century, over and over again. With our own version of the Roaring Twenties approaching, the Flapper fever is building up to be a full on epidemic. Find it in bridal couture and evening wear in the form of fringes, feathers and sequins coming together to create an effect that is as textural as it is visual. Brands like Viola by Fariha have been flirting with 20’s style for a few seasons now, and are well prepared for the upcoming decade in style.

True colours    

With destination weddings becoming more widespread, brides are opting to break away from traditional palette of reds and exploring unconventional colours for their attire. The newfound preference for pastels remain strong, although this year has also seen the return and rise of gorgeous jewel tones.

Testing metals

Be it a rise in gold prices, a fashion nostalgia or simply a desire to stand out, gold jewellery isn’t the only option for ornamentation anymore. While flower ornaments for holuds have been getting more elaborate and structured, a trend that started out as the purview of holuds and sangeets is making its way into the main event, with full sets of vintage silver taking pride of place on Jamdani saris. What started as an innovation by pages like Orange Theory and Six Yard Story has become a viable alternative style.

Organic elegance

As the climate crisis continues to create uncertainty about our collective future, the fashion world is waking up and soul-searching in an attempt to be more sustainable. Lucky for us, we’ve already got a leg up on that, our traditional handloom and handwoven industries having a low carbon footprint since, well, forever. The initiatives taken by organisations like the Fashion Design Council of Bangladesh, and with fashion powerhouses like Aarong and Arannya really stepping up their game in providing luxe handloom designs, stepping out for a dawat, or even getting married in eco-chic organic handloom is a powerful style statement to make.

Season of the groom

 Thanks to celebs like Ranvir Singh and Virat Kohli setting the trend for the rest of the sub-continent, the grooms are no longer content to play wallflowers at their wedding. It is his day as much as hers, and now he isn’t afraid to step out into the limelight with everything from floral sherwanis to killer suits with textural details, and as much thought put into extras and accessories as the bride puts into her jewellery, and we could not be more proud.
