The dates of the 'star signs' were fixed, over 2,000 years ago, when the zodiac was first devised. Then, they corresponded to the constellation of stars that appeared behind the Sun on the day you were born. But an astronomical phenomenon, unknown at the time, means that the constellations have drifted since then.
The astronomers from the Minnesota Planetarium Society found that because of the moon’s gravitational pull on Earth, the alignment of the stars was pushed by about a month, and there has been a major disturbance in the alignment of stars.
“When astrologers say that the sun is in Pisces, it’s really not in Pisces,” stated Parke Kunkle, a member of the group’s board. Your zodiac sign has been determined by the position of the sun on the day you were born, so that means everything you thought you knew about your horoscope is wrong.
It turns out that astrology has had issues from its inception. Ancient Babylonians had 13 constellations, but wanted only 12, so threw out Ophiuchus, the snake holder.
The 13th sign was deliberately removed more than 2,000 years ago. It is believed that this could be related to the difficulty of dividing 360 degrees of the sky into 13 parts. The current 12 zodiac signs makes it relatively easy to divide 360 degrees into 12 equal parts of 30 degrees each. That being said, an equal division is not realistic as the sun does not remain in each constellation for the same amount of time.
