7 questions with Unaiza Haque

For Unaiza, being able to make someone look and feel their most beautiful is nothing short of magical. “Make up is the most impactful way to express one's own individuality, whether it is all-natural or a full 'glam' make up. In makeup artistry, no facial features are exactly like another. That is what makes it so beautiful and exciting,” says the hair and makeup artist herself.

From being trained at the prestigious Academy of Freelance Makeup (AOFM) in Soho, London to working backstage at London Fashion Week, working with Max Factor for Summer In The City 2016 (UK YouTube Awards), publishing her work in magazines like Elements Magazine New York and working backstage again at London Fashion Week and Milan Fashion Week quite recently, Unaiza Haque is most probably the first Bangladeshi makeup artist to work backstage in both London and Milan.

Pursuing this dream of expressing my makeup and hair artistry has made me more dedicated and passionate to serve my clients with beautiful looks, tailored to their features and tastes, especially for my bridal clients,” said Unaiza, who’s currently based in London, United Kingdom.

Whether it is a classic white wedding to colourful Asian brides or rest of the wedding party, I like to create beautifully timeless looks by utilizing my skills. Each client must be specially prepped and painted to create a customized and flawless application. I use high quality makeup products that are my tools to artfully layer, blend and achieve the desired effect,” she added.

In a recent conversation with the Weekend Tribune, the graceful Unaiza Haque shared a few of her pro tips for hair and makeup.

What's trending this season?

As we are transitioning towards the Autumn/Winter season, we are expecting bolder, richer and darker colours, especially when the wedding season arrives.

One of the key trends this season is skin with high luminosity and shine which creates movement in the skin when the light hits.

Pro tip - We can achieve it by using liquid highlighter such as Cover FX     Custom Enhancer Drops or for a cheaper option, go for NYX Away We     Glow Liquid Highlighter, topping it off with any of your  favourite     powder highlighter.

For the eyes:

Metallic smokey eyes are the rage this season as seen in Marc Jacobs & Carolina Herrera AW 18/19.

Pro tip - There are quite a few foiled shadows in the market from Huda  Beauty (9 pan Eyeshadows) palettes to BH Cosmetics 28 pan foiled     shadows. Use one specific colour. However, apply it with two different brushes – use the flat application brush to pack the colour on to the lids and a blending brush to blend off the colour     on the edges.

Whether it is a classic white wedding to colourful Asian brides or rest of the wedding party, I like to create beautifully timeless looks by utilizing my skills.

Bold colour liners are also quite popular.

Pro tip - Use a coloured  eyeliner pencil of your choice  on the bottom     lid and smudge it out with a small blending brush. Top it off with     the same colour matte eyeshadow for a bolder, intensified look.

For the lips:

Wine and berry colours are great for the coming season. However, it’s applied more like a stain with smudged out edges rather than sharp lines.

Pro tip- Use lipsticks with a satin or creamier finish. Also, gloss is     back with a vengeance this season.

The colour story:

Blue, browns, berries and holographic colours are all very popular this season. Stick to those colours and you will be good to go.

What’s your favourite makeup look and hair style this season?

There are a couple of looks that are my favourite this season, especially for make up.

Firstly, I like the look of the glossy lips and holographic highlighter on the cheeks with dewy skin. It’s more geared towards a ‘no make up makeup’ look. Secondly, I love the blue metallic smoky eye, it’s very Kim Kardashian - hate her or love her but you have to admit that her makeup is always on point.

For hair, I like the messy waves which you can achieve by using a root booster to add volume into the roots and apply styling mousse on the rest of the hair. Blow dry the entire hair. Use a curling tong to curl the hair. However leave the ends uncurled. Brush through the curls with your hands and use texturizing or a sea salt spray to finish the look.

I love this hair trend, because you can go from day to night easily. Moreover, it’s quite easy to achieve.

Given the heavy foundation, contouring and highlighting regimen that's been so popular for the last couple of seasons, how do you keep things simple?

My philosophy is that, you must use foundation in layers. It makes the skin have the coverage without looking ‘cakey’. It’s the same with cream contouring, using it lightly and blending out with a damp sponge.

Personally, I prefer to use foundations with a medium but build-able coverage rather than a full coverage one. I also like to use a matte powder bronzer (Hoola Bronzer by Benefit) to warm up the face and cooler brown contour powder on the hollows of the cheeks to create dimension on the face.

Why do you think the monochromatic makeup is so trendy these days? And how to do it right?

If done right, monochromatic makeup can be timeless. You just have to find the right balance in how much product you apply and in what areas. If the eyes are heavy, make the lips light with a lipstain or coloured gloss. If the lips are bold, use a light wash of colour on the eyes.

What, in your opinion, is the most flattering brow trend this season?

If you’re blessed with thick brows, brush it up with some tinted brow gel mascara. However, if you’re like me with sparse and thin eyebrows, I suggest use a good brow gel pomade to draw and fill out the outer edge to give shape and volume and feather out the front part. Finish with some tinted brow gel mascara.

My philosophy is that, you must use foundation in layers. It makes the skin have the coverage without looking ‘cakey’.

The trend that should be ditched:

Additionally, if you have a natural uni-brow with good shape, please do not over pluck your eyebrows. Some people in Dhaka pluck their brows deliberately to make them look like uni-brows – this is a definite NO! It makes the face look angry all the time.

What do you think are the best hair trends this season?

The 90’s influences are very heavy this coming season and according to my prediction, it will be like this for the coming seasons too. For hair, as I mentioned before, the messy grunge curls/waves are in. Apart from that, a straight and sleek ponytail with an exaggerated middle or side parting will look great this coming wedding season.

Any hair and makeup tips that you'd like to share with the readers of Weekend Tribune?

With hair and makeup, the best tip I can give is - less is more. Try to find a balance and don’t go over the top. With a flurry of Instagram and YouTube videos, we are forgetting that makeup is about accentuating your best features, not covering up every single pore on your skin.
