Former caretaker government adviser and Supreme Court lawyer Mainul Hosein came under fire after calling journalist Masuda Bhatti characterless on a talk show aired live on Ekattor TV

A group of senior journalists and newspaper editors have condemned Barrister Mainul Hosein for his abusive language against journalist Masuda Bhatti and demanded that he apologize.

In a statement issued yesterday, the journalists said that no one had the right to call anyone ‘characterless’ when faced with a journalistic query.

Former caretaker government adviser and Supreme Court lawyer Mainul Hosein came under fire after calling journalist Masuda Bhatti "characterless" on a talk show aired live on Ekattor TV.

“While the free press and media are under attack from many directions, such behaviour from politician and law expert Barrister Moinul is completely unacceptable,” the statement said.

“In consensus with people from across the country who have protested this, we too express our utmost condemnation of this. We demand that Barrister Moinul Hossain withdraw his heinous statement and publicly beg for forgiveness,” it said.

“This is not only because Masuda Bhatti was humiliated, but also so that no one has to come under such a personal attack in the future, that such a public apology is required of him. It is every citizen’s goal to ensure tolerance and democratic behaviour at all levels of the society in order to create a better Bangladesh for tomorrow,” it added.

Among the signatories of the statement were Matiur Rahman, editor of Prothom Alo, Md Shafiqur Rahman, president of National Press Club, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, editor of The Daily Observer, Mahfuz Anam, editor of The Daily Star, Naimul Islam Khan, editor of Amader Notun Shomoy, Abul Kalam Azad, managing director of BSS, Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, editor-in-chief of ETV, Zafar Sobhan, editor of Dhaka Tribune, among many others.
