Bir Shreshtha Noor Mohammad’s wife passes away

Freedom fighters, politicians and people from all walks of life express sympathy and condolences from all over the country

Fazilatunnesa, wife of Bir Shreshtha Shaheed Lance Nayek Noor Mohammad Sheikh, has died at the age of 80.

She passed away while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka around 7:25pm on Wednesday.

On Thursday evening she was laid to rest at the family graveyard in Chandiborpur union’s Dhuriya village under Narail Sadar upazila.

Earlier in the day, Fazilatunnesa’s body was taken to her village home in Narail town’s Kurigram area.

Her Namaz-e-Janaza was held at the Narail Victoria College playground around 4:30pm.

There, her family members and local government officials, including the district’s deputy commissioner and superintendent of police, and people from all walks of life, also paid their last respects.

Suffering from old age complications, Fazilatunnesa was taken from her Kurigram residence on October 27 to the Border Guard Hospital in Dhaka’s Pilkhana. She was later transferred to CMH.

Noor Mohammad was one of seven valiant freedom fighters awarded Bir Shreshtha, the highest Bangladesh military honor, for their bravery and the highest sacrifice made during the 1971 Liberation War.

A Lance Nayek in East Pakistan Rifles during the war, Noor was killed in an engagement with the Pakistan Army while providing covering fire for fellow soldiers – saving them and inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy –in Jessore’s Goalhati on September 5, 1971. 

PM mourns

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led others in mourning the death of Fazilatunnesa.

In a condolence message on Thursday, she prayed for salvation of her departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family members.

Freedom fighters, politicians, and people from all walks of life also expressed sympathy and condolences from all over the country.

The prime minister visited ailing Fazilatunnesa at CMH several hours before she died.

Hasina also visited the ailing wife of Bir Shreshtha Munshi Abdur Rauf at the same hospital.
