Journalist Anwarul Haq passes away

DCAB, DRU mourns its founder member’s demise

Noted journalist M Anwarul Haq, 63, passed away after suffering a massive stroke on Friday morning.

The breathed his last around 5:30am after being rushed to Labaid Hospital.

Anwarul was a former president of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) and one of the founding members of Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB).

He left behind his wife, two sons, a daughter and a host of relatives, friends, colleagues and well-wishers to mourn his death.

His namaz-e-janaza was held after Jumma prayers at Sobhanbag Mosque followed by a second janaza at the DRU at 3pm and later he was buried at the Azimpur graveyard.

The eminent journalist served as the DRU president in 2000 and 2001 and served as director of Public Affairs and Communications of Brac.

Anwarul was also the minister (Press) at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, India, and the chief reporter, city editor, diplomatic and defence correspondent of The Daily Star, during his long journalism career.

DCAB President Raheed Ejaz and General Secretary Nurul Islam Hasib, on behalf of the executive committee, expressed their deep shock at the death of Anwarul.

In a condolence message, they prayed for the departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family members. They also recalled his contribution in establishing the DCAB.

Anwar had interviewed some of the top political and international figures in the world had including former US presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter of the USA; former British prime minister John Major; Dr Mahathir Mohammad of Malaysia; Manmohan Singh, IK Gujral, Deve Gowda and Pranab Mukherjee of India; Fidel Ramos and Corazon Aquino of the Philippines; Fuji Mori of Peru, Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan; Suleyman Demerial of Turkey; Nelson Mandela of South Africa, Yasser Arafat of Palestine and former UN secretary general Kofi Annan.
