Himel Barkat, a professor at the Bangla department of Jahangirnagar University (JU), died of cardiac arrest at Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital in Dhaka early on Sunday.
He was 42 years old.
Also a poet and younger brother of noted poet late Rudra Mohammad Shahidullah, Himel Barkat breathed his last around 4.30am while undergoing treatment at the hospital, said Dr Nahid Haque, chairman of the JU Bangla Department.
JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam expressed deep shock at the death of Himel Barkat.
In a condolence message, she said his untimely death is an irreparable loss to Bengali literature and the university.
The JU VC also prayed for the eternal peace of his departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to his bereaved family.
