High speed rail connections are the future of Bangladesh.

We need better trains, and more comprehensive railway lines. This would not only facilitate communication and trade with other regions, but also encourage decentralisation and the development of alternative places.

It is good to see two new passenger trains being inaugurated for the Dhaka-Kolkata route.

There is no doubt that better connectivity with India is crucial to Bangladesh’s growth, and more of these comfortable, convenient trains would be a welcome initiative to alleviate many of the travel woes we face today.

Better and faster trains for travel within Bangladesh would revitalise the economy. Easier movement between Dhaka and Chittagong in a way that is environmentally and economically sustainable would do wonders for both cities.

Trains from Dhaka to other major urban areas would relieve a bit of the enormous pressure that the capital city is currently under.

It is of utmost importance to improve rail travel in order to enable business and investment to spread around the country.

Encouraging more people to take the train would also reduce the untenable traffic congestion on our highways, cutting down travel time, reducing emissions, and improving the overall standard of living.

Domestic and international tourism would also get a much-needed boost.

There is much to be learnt from the European Union, where economic growth and a high quality of life have been achieved largely through affordable, safe, and efficient rail travel.

Bangladesh would do well to aspire to such possibilities, and invest wisely.
