As we look back at 2016, we reflect on the many challenges that Bangladesh has dealt with.
But the New Year is also a time to look ahead, to rebuild, to heal, and to bravely overcome new hurdles of an ever-changing world.
We must never forget the lessons learned in the past year.
The brutal attacks at Holey Artisan Bakery shook the nation to its core, and made clear the ugly face of extremism which exists in our country.
Denial about these problems will get us nowhere.
We have seen waves of attacks on our minority communities, and the apparent inability or unwillingness of our law enforcement to protect them.
The world gasped at the election of Donald Trump to the US presidency, and the UK’s exit from the European Union. Only time will make clear the long-term implications for Bangladesh.
But there remains reason to be hopeful for a peaceful and prosperous year ahead.
For all our problems, we are a nation moving forward at a formidable pace.
Our economy remains as dynamic as ever, and we are lifting more and more people out of poverty every day.
There is work to do, but it is likely that soon we will become a middle-income nation.
Bangladesh is bursting with youthful talent and energy, and it is time to tap into that potential.
It is also inspiring to see more and more women leading in their fields, from politics, to science, to sports.
To move forward without being derailed, Bangladesh needs stability and vision -- this is not only possible, but necessary.
We hope 2017 will be a better year for all our Bangladeshis.
The Dhaka Tribune wishes all its readers a Happy New Year.
