Too many fires, too many questions

Once again, a fire has wreaked havoc in the capital.

On Monday, firefighters worked tirelessly to douse a fire that broke out in a shoe factory in Jatrabari.

With the recent fire at the Gulshan DCC market still fresh in our minds, questions abound as to why this sort of incident continues to plague our capital -- and no more can we stand by and let this continue to be the case.

When will this stop?

Fires have become the go-to method for criminals and saboteurs who wish to harm a person or institution without implicating themselves, and any allegations of such must be investigated by the authorities without a moment’s hesitation.

First things first, of course: The city should be prepared in cases of such incidents, and firefighters must reach the area affected as soon as possible.

Additionally, if any foul play is detected, the authorities must do their absolute best to ensure that the perpetrators be brought to book and promptly punished.

Arsonists cannot be allowed to get away with a mere slap on the wrist.

Regardless of any evidence of foul play, it must become mandatory for structures in the city, and everywhere else in the country, to be equipped with proper fire prevention measures such as fire extinguishers on each floor, and have fire escapes planned alongside their construction.

Complacency regarding safety and security is a trait that has become all too common for us as a people.

Let this be the final wake-up call the citizens and the authorities so require. Let fires such as this become a thing of the past.
