A positive step towards ending abuse

The Foreign Ministry’s decision to disallow diplomats from taking domestic help abroad is a good call.

This comes on the heel of several cases in which the help was allegedly tortured and abused by their employers.

The abuse of domestic help is all too common in Bangladesh, and even more so abroad, where they find themselves alone.

This directive will prevent future cases of violence against household working men and women, and ensure that diplomats follow local rules and regulations while hiring domestic help.

Diplomats need to know that these people have rights, and that they cannot get away with treating them as second-class citizens.

We hope the cases are properly investigated and those found guilty of abuse of power are brought to book.
