The Chittagong port seems to be in dire straits.
Given that our RMG sector is the current lifeblood of our economy, it is a matter of concern when the majority of our RMG exports are hamstrung by the poor state of the Chittagong port -- where 90% of all of Bangladeshi exports go through.
There is no better case for a sweeping overhaul of the Chittagong port than this.
The port administration needs to introduce upgrades in the form of new equipment which can deal with the overwhelming shipping congestion, and do it swiftly.
Alternative methods such as air shipments are clearly untenable for a sector as nascent as our RMG industry.
For our economy to maintain its momentum, not only do we need to upgrade our existing ports but also make plans to develop new ones.
