The water keeps rising

Update : 18 Aug 2017, 02:10 PM

With widespread flooding, the country could be on the verge of catastrophe.

According to latest reports, 57 people have died across 13 districts, with most casualties occurring in the northern district of Dinajpur.

As we have editorialised before, Bangladesh is not new to the problem of floods, but year after year, we find ourselves woefully unprepared.

Countless people find themselves stranded and with their crops damaged, while the nation teeters on the edge of a food crisis.

It is time to think long-term and invest in the right things -- industrial infrastructure, and food self-sufficiency -- so that as the sea levels rise further, Bangladesh stands ready.
