Can we save Purbachal before it’s too late?

With Purbachal being the country’s largest township plan, it has the potential to truly improve residential living for the people of this country.

However, it seems, old habits die hard.

Illegal encroachers and occupiers have continued to build homes, hotels, restaurants, etc on these lands, without government approval.

This is the kind of illegal construction that has led previous remodelling of residential areas to failure.

Since Purbachal will have 26,000 residential plots, it can be a great addition to the other infrastructural changes that the country has been going through.

But the government cannot let history repeat itself.

The areas of Dhanmondi, Gulshan, Banani, and Uttara have all resulted in the loss of finances and comfort of the residents of the capital.

Purbachal cannot be allowed to suffer the same fate.

Experts have already bemoaned the fact that, should unplanned structures be allowed to continue to be constructed in such a manner, Purbachal will turn out to be unliveable.

The fact that illegal construction continues to take place is a stark reminder of weak law enforcement coupled with politically-backed thuggery. Merely providing them with notices is not enough.

The authorities need to come down harder on illegal settlements and ensure that the land being utilised is done so fairly and with transparency. This township is meant to benefit the people, not local goons who refuse to follow the letter of the law.
