Spreading out the jobs
It is hard to put food on the table without a stable income. Currently, many amongst the rural poor are dependent on our agricultural sector as their primary source of income. This means that their wages are seasonal and, so is their access to regular meals. This is a vicious cycle for the rural poor to go through, and is not a sustainable way of living. Living hand to mouth for half the year is no one’s ideal scenario. This means that, for the rest of the year, they are forced to find income elsewhere, which usually entails moving to urban areas for better employment opportunities. The problem here is two-fold: For one, most can barely afford to make the trip to the big city, which forces them to borrow money from richer families at high interest rates. For another, we cannot keep relying on the few urban centres we have to keep providing for the rest of the nation. While the RDRS program has provided commendable relief to these families by providing loans to these families so that they can travel to areas with greater job stability, this is no long-term solution. Our cities, especially Dhaka, remain highly congested, and the solution to this problem is our facilities, services, and businesses to decentralise. It is essential at this point in time to ensure food security and stable employment scenarios everywhere else in the country. While our economy has continued to blossom at a strong and healthy rate, when it comes to job creation, we have lagged behind. We need to incentivise our businesses so that they are encouraged further to set up shop in areas where there is great potential for employment, so that our industries are allowed to spread out across the country.
