In her address to Bangladesh Chhatra League, Prime Minsiter Sheikh Hasina made it clear that education was a person’s greatest asset, and that leaders and activists should first acquire knowledge before getting into politics.
We truly hope the student organization pays heed to the prime minister’s words, and refrains from destructive activities in the name of politics.
Student politics has a proud history in Bangladesh, and it is a sad state of affairs when they are seen to engage in violence, create situations of fear, and hurt innocents.
This is not the way: Bangladesh has ambitious development goals, and the road ahead will not be easy; and for these goals to be achieved, all arms of the government must work in harmony.
Chhatra League would do well to keep in mind the ideals of the Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, because politics without ideology can lose its way.
Taking the law into their own hands, and activities such as attacking citizens on the streets or vandalizing the vice chancellor’s residence do not count as politics, protest, or education, they are hooliganism, plain and simple, and should not be tolerated.
The prime minister has, in the past, sent a clear message to the BCL that violence committed under the party’s name is violence nonetheless.
It is high time that the student organization which claims to be part of the ruling party listened to the words of their leader, and engaged in constructive solutions obeying the law, and not acting out of turn and giving politics a bad name.
