There is little doubt that, with Bangladesh simultaneously fighting the effects of climate change as among the most vulnerable countries in the world while also engineering its economic rise and maintaining its impressive growth, it must look to produce electricity for the country through cleaner, renewable sources.
To that end, capitalizing on the power of solar energy is Bangladesh’s best option.
According to a recent report published under a joint initiative of the UN Environment Program (UNEP) and Asian Development Bank (ADB), covering 1.5% of Bangladesh’s land area with solar installations could potentially generate 3,080TWh of power, which is equivalent to seven times the current total consumption of electricity.
Currently, power generation and producing electricity is one of the highest contributors to carbon emissions globally -- with nations, including Bangladesh, relying heavily on traditional means of producing electricity such as coal, gas, and other non-renewable fossil fuels.
This, however, is not sustainable, and will inadvertently prove to be a mistake.
Bangladesh is among the most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change and, unless drastic measures are taken by the global community to reduce carbon emissions, there will be untold devastation that falls upon nations such as ours.
Renewable sources of producing electricity such as solar, wind, and water, therefore, will be the answer moving forward, and for Bangladesh, there is little doubt that it is solar energy that provides the best opportunity.
