Living with dignity

Better quality homes will most certainly translate into higher quality of life

Every day, people from rural areas come to the capital city in search of livelihoods, and all of these new arrivals to Dhaka, it goes without saying, need a place to live.

In a city bursting at the seams, a large number of low-income people find refuge in the slums.

However, the terrible living conditions in the city’s slums which the urban poor have to endure do not befit a country aspiring to middle income status, or a city that is trying to shed the stigma of being labelled as one of the least liveable cities in the world.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina understands the need for a comprehensive solution to the urban housing problem, and so deserves kudos for initiating seven housing development projects which will provide slum dwellers with 533 new flats.

This is just the beginning of course, with further plans to build some 16,000 new flats for the urban poor.

Better quality homes will most certainly translate into higher quality of life for the poor citizens of this country, and this will enable people to not only live lives of dignity, but to be more productive, economically speaking.

The slums of Dhaka right now are barely fit for habitation: It is common knowledge that the structures are dilapidated, not to mention dangerous; they lack proper sanitation and waste management properties, and are therefore hygienic, and they contribute to the overall mismanagement of the city, with the problems of slums spilling into other areas.

Many development projects are taking place in Dhaka at the moment, but it is important to include the urban poor in that vision -- high quality, affordable housing for the poor is a major part of that endeavour.
