Landfill of the dead

Twelve years after DNCC started using the area as a landfill, the city corporation has just started operating an effluent plant, that again, on a trial basis Mehedi Hasan/Dhaka Tribune

It is unacceptable that authorities continue to be so negligent

By this time, there should be no confusion regarding to what extent Bangladesh’s natural eco-system has been damaged: From rivers which lie dying to a shrinking Bengal Tiger population, the situation is such that we must do everything in our power to save them from inevitable destruction, especially as one of the nations most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

However, if one were to look at the Amin Bazar sanitary landfill, it seems that such action will not be taking place any time soon.

The landfill, resting on the flood flow zone near the Turag River, has essentially turned into an artificial floating island, with around 2,000 tons of waste dumped in it on a daily basis.

With the DNCC not having followed necessary directives during the construction of the landfill, and no adequate steps taken to ensure that the trash remains separate from the water, the environment has essentially been turned into a polluted, lifeless zone.

It is unacceptable that authorities continue to be so negligent: In the surrounding area, the water has a bluish tint, the trees grow no leaves, the land is infertile.

Is this how a nation -- one which takes climate change and the environment seriously and has plans of middle income status -- treats the environment?

No, this must stop.

We expect the DNCC to get itself into shape. The authorities must find a permanent waste management solution, one which treats the waste properly and does not continue to pollute our already polluted rivers.
