Ensuring sufficient tree coverage provides numerous benefits

To say that Bangladesh has made significant strides in its development journey would be an understatement.

From fulfilling most of our Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to now being on the way to fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we can certainly be proud of all the progress that we have made as a nation.

However, there was one MDG we could not fulfill -- ensuring environmental sustainability by having a certain amount of forest coverage.

Despite the failure on the part of Bangladesh to fulfill the MDG within the allotted time, there is no reason for Bangladesh to not aspire to increase its tree coverage.

To that end, it is wonderful to see that the government has initiated several programs to increase the country’s total tree coverage to 25% by 2025, with the hope that these programs are now implemented so that goal can be achieved within time.

While it is true that Bangladesh’s overpopulation is a major obstacle in achieving the right amount of tree coverage, it cannot be stated enough how important it is, for the long-term health of a nation, to ensure that it has enough trees.

Ensuring sufficient tree coverage provides numerous benefits, from preventing soil erosion, to protection from natural calamities, to battling the inevitable effects of climate change -- effects that Bangladesh is particularly susceptible to.

Additionally, trees help keep the air clean, and with Dhaka consistently ranking as among the cities with the worst air quality, we simply cannot ignore their importance.

More trees everywhere, will, undoubtedly make all of our lives better.
