Justice served, hope restored

This verdict is a testament to the ability of our judicial system and our law enforcement agencies

The verdict on the sensational Nusrat Jahan murder case has been delivered.

The Nusrat murder case was especially awe-inspiring, because it had multiple facets. It had aspects of sexual harassment, abuse of power, and a quest for justice. Nusrat finally met her tragic fate for demanding justice for the abuses she had faced in the past. She has finally received justice, although she is not here to see it.

The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal declared this verdict within six months of a case being filed regarding the incident. This is an epoch-making development for our times, when the public has massively lost trust in the judicial system, and has repeatedly taken the law into its own hands.

A simple expedited verdict in this case will go a long way in restoring the public trust upon the institutions in our republic. Those who had lost all hope on our courts for their backlogs and delays now have a reason to rekindle their hopes for a more expedient and efficient court system.

This verdict is a testament to the ability of our judicial system and our law enforcement agencies -- it proves that, if left unimpeded and supported to a certain extent, our institutions can produce good results in an expedient fashion. The role of the State Ministry in ensuring this climate for the institutions to work independently and corroborating when necessary is also laudable.

But we must also remember that the struggle that Nusrat stands for has not yet lost its need. In the memory of Nusrat, we must work to make sure that there are no more cases like hers. We must take steps to end all impunity for perpetrators, so that there are no more victims like Nusrat in the future.
