It is of the utmost importance that we prioritize investing in our children and young population

It is rather heartening to see that Bangladesh has made impressive progress when it comes to combating child malnutrition, along with other key areas such as infant mortality rate and availability of safe drinking water.

According to findings from a survey conducted by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), there has been a sharp decline of chronic malnutrition amongst children, which fell from 42% in 2012-13 to 28% in 2019.

Our children are the future leaders of our nation, and it is good to see that the government and relevant authorities and stakeholders recognize this fact, providing our rural areas with the support that has helped fight the issue of malnutrition and child mortality in our country.

However, while signs are encouraging in this regard, there remains much work to be done on this front, and we should build upon this positive trajectory of dealing with deficiencies that exist within our country, particularly when it comes to our children.

Despite the progress that has been made, malnutrition and child mortality both remain major problems for Bangladesh, as is the overall development and protection of our children -- be it their overall health, their education, or addressing the scourge of child marriage and overall gender inequality.

For that, it is of the utmost importance that we prioritize investing in our children and young population. This will no doubt be critical if we are to successfully fulfill the requirements for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

If our children are to eventually find employment and become responsible citizens, leading Bangladesh even further ahead on the global stage, then the onus is on the present generation, on the government, to ensure that reality.
