The Election Commission’s decision to launch online and digital NID services is an excellent and timely initiative
As we battle through the current Covid-19 pandemic, it is important that the authorities innovate and adapt in order to continue to serve the masses.
To that end, the Election Commission’s decision to launch online and digital NID services is an excellent and timely initiative.
Not only will this help keep a check on the current pandemic situation during the enforced lockdown, but above all, it makes the procedure far simpler for the general population as well.
We have witnessed, time and time again, how government services such as issuing passports and NID cards take a frustratingly long time, with the procedures ultimately bogged down by layers of bureaucracy.
This often detracts people from re-applying for these important documents, particularly if they have lost or misplaced their NID cards.
Moving to a digital system -- where the applicants can either visit the official website or by sending an SMS to the designated hotline -- should go a long way in speeding up the procedure significantly, while also saving applicants time and money since they do not have to physically visit offices and stand in lines.
Bangladesh adopted the “Digital Bangladesh” manifesto as part of its identity over a decade ago. While we have certainly made strides in our bid to fulfill that vision, we still have some ways to go, and must continue to adopt digital solutions.
As we proceed forward, navigating through the challenges of the current pandemic, it will be vital for the government to practice innovative thinking and planning to continue to serve the people and make life easier for all.
