What we need are clear instructions, both for the people and the authorities

As the coronavirus pandemic rages across the world, Bangladesh remains one of the countries which have yet to get a stronghold on its spread, with almost 100,000 confirmed cases and over 1,300 deaths.

In this regard, it was commendable for the government to have come up with a sensible strategy, ie zonal lockdowns, but, as we have editorialized before, without proper implementation -- as well as proper coordination -- a strategy is as good as no strategy at all.

Unfortunately, it seems that is exactly what is happening right now, with city corporations across the country unprepared for implementation, floundering in their own confusion.

While the DNCC and DSCC remain somewhat in the loop, it seems that much of the rest of the country is unaware of the standard operation procedures to be followed in order to implement the zonal lockdown -- an unacceptable situation.

When the people of this country are suffering to such an extent, we cannot afford to dillydally and add to the confusion and doubt permeating across the country.

What we need are clear instructions, both for the people and the authorities, so that we do not exacerbate an already worsening situation.

Every level of government, from ward councillors to local NGOs, must be made aware of the correct procedures of the zonal lockdown. This is not only to make sure certain areas are cordoned off successfully to contain the spread of the virus, but to also ensure that these zones receive adequate supplies and treatment as the lockdown continues.

Right now, there is entirely too much confusion, not only among the public who are supposed to observe the lockdown, but the very people who are meant to put it in place.
