ED: Keeping the peace while shattering stereotypes

Despite the almost certain danger that comes with the occupation and with every mission, our peacekeepers have strived tirelessly to secure peace and stability globally

Partaking in UN peacekeeping missions is one of our country’s more important contributions in the international arena. Despite the almost certain danger that comes with the occupation and with every mission, our peacekeepers have strived tirelessly to secure peace and stability globally.

Being the highest contributor of UN peacekeepers is an immense source of national pride for Bangladesh, and we could not be more proud of the recently deployed women peacekeepers who will be responsible for ensuring the security of Monusco Airport in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

According to a press release by Bangladesh Police Headquarters Assistant Inspector General (AIG-media) Md Sohel Rana, the women peacekeepers from the Bangladesh Police are proud to have the responsibility of securing a UN-run airport of such importance. Bangladesh, also being one of the top contributors of female peacekeepers, is a trailblazer for gender equality in this sector.

With the coronavirus pandemic still wreaking havoc across the world, and projected to get worse in the upcoming winter months, as well as rising international tensions, these missions have become all the more dangerous for our peacekeepers.

Despite this, that they consider this particular mission to be a source of dignity and pride, and are confident about their success, is more than enough for us to honour their bravery and sacrifice. Women in peacekeeping are shattering gender stereotypes both home and abroad, and their work may spur positive change in attitudes within our own law enforcement or armed forces.

We salute these brave women for the work they do in service of the greater good.
