ED: Supporting developing nations for a better world

We need innovative and coordinated 'support measures' in order to ensure the success of this graduation from LDC to developing nation

With Bangladesh’s dreams of becoming a middle-income nation just around the corner, it is imperative that we continue to work towards eliminating the bottlenecks and inefficiencies in our national eco-system for sustainable growth and prosperity.

This is, perhaps, a challenge that Bangladesh cannot overcome alone.

Despite our impressive economic growth and subsequent socio-economic improvements over the last decade, some of the challenges we face require support from development partners and certain bodies within the UN, especially during a pandemic that has ravaged the world and caused tremendous harm to life and livelihood.

We cannot help but agree with Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN Rabab Fatima when she says that we need innovative and coordinated “support measures” in order to ensure the success of this graduation from LDC to developing nation, especially considering the interconnected nature in which the world functions, a fact further highlighted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

These support measures would be especially beneficial in the realms of trade, intellectual property rights, and financing, according to the ambassador, and Bangladesh would do well to ensure that it too does its part at home.

The Covid-19 pandemic has revealed some of the deep-rooted flaws in the way the world has functioned over the course of the last century, in addition to the grave inequalities within and amongst nations which exist.

Such supportive measures would go a long way toward not only allowing developing nations such as Bangladesh to rise up and elevate in status, but would also create a globalized network of nations which have the ability to support each other in times of crisis and create sustainable growth for all.
