ED: Ending the exploitation of migrant workers

Migrant workers have never received the respect and the support that they have earned

Update : 01 Jul 2021, 02:26 AM

It is encouraging to see the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Brac and Bangla Trac Group to promote Ami Probashi, an app that facilitates overseas employment related services.

Through the app, people wishing to pursue work overseas will easily be able to access the required information for online applications and search for the relevant jobs that they want. Furthermore, they shall also be able to connect to government-approved recruiting agents, access a list of passport offices and medical centres, and gather information on the different stages of the immigration process and country-wise regulations.

Such an initiative is welcome news -- the plight of our overseas workers has been talked about repeatedly, and there continue to remain unscrupulous actors who try to take advantage of those who are desperate and lack the knowhow of proper procedure.

Brac’s involvement in this is particularly encouraging, as they shall be able to educate the marginalized in society through their vast reach, and in the process, offer aspiring migrants the right information and the right channel to seek employment.

Despite remittance being such an integral part of our economy, migrant workers have never received the respect and the support that they have earned through their blood, sweat, and tears, leaving their families behind and making unfathomable sacrifices.

It can be hoped that initiatives such as this app will become the norm, so that migrant workers can continue to contribute to our economy without experiencing the myriad difficulties and hardships that they have historically faced.
