Reducing the age of vaccination shows the right intent from the government, but it must match this intent with proper planning

Bangladesh continues to be in the midst of its worst period of the Covid-19 pandemic, with infection rates currently over 30% despite the slight reduction in daily deaths.

While the government made the right call in once again employing a harsh lockdown to try and curb the spread of the virus, it is abundantly clear by now that there is only one viable option to bring an end to this pandemic, and that is vaccinating the population.

To that end, the news that Bangladesh is looking to lower the age of coronavirus vaccination to 18 years, according to the chief of the Directorate General of Health Service, is excellent news, and shows that the government understands that prioritization of the administration of the vaccine is the way to go.

However, while this is indeed good news, it is equally important for the authorities concerned to ensure that we are not simply making empty promises and that there is an actual plan in place to actually go through with the intent of vaccinating the entirety of the adult population in the country.

Unfortunately, we have already seen vaccination halted once in the country due to the lack of adequate vaccine supply. While the government looks to have learned from its earlier errors of procuring the doses from only one source -- and has since diversified to procure a wide range of vaccines from different sources -- vaccinating the entirety of the adult population will require a steady supply of vaccines, and the government has to ensure that we do not face a shortage once again.

Furthermore, reducing the age to 18 may overwhelm the registration website, and cause long delays to ultimately receive the jabs. The government must also keep tabs on the latest variants of the virus, and ensure that the vaccines being procured are going to be effective against them.

Reducing the age of vaccination shows the right intent from the government, but it must match this intent with proper planning and implementation to ensure that our vaccine administration process remains effective and efficient as well.
