ED: The care they deserve

The pandemic should serve as a reminder of how much improvement our medical infrastructure truly needs

It is good to see the number of daily deaths from Covid-19 in Bangladesh drop below 100 for the first time in two months, with 80 deaths recorded on Saturday.

Without a pro-active vaccination drive and a strict lockdown, this would not have been possible, and the government and health authorities must be commended for their efforts.

However, we must be wary of complacency settling in; we have been caught unprepared in the past, leading to heartbreaking images of hapless patients as they struggled to find treatment within an overburdened healthcare sector.

Preparation and prevention will remain key moving forward, and now that daily cases and deaths appear to be on the decline, the authorities concerned would do well to adopt stringent efforts to stock up on vaccines and ensure that health guidelines are being maintained in and around public areas.

The pandemic, and indeed this latest surge in Covid cases, should serve as a reminder of how much improvement our medical infrastructure truly needs, which continues to be woefully underfunded, with most regional powers investing far more in the sector.

Despite our best efforts, we may fall victim to yet another wave of Covid-19 cases, especially now that lockdown restrictions have been lifted. As such, it is imperative that there is a collective effort to ensure that our healthcare sector is prioritized and aims to provide the best treatment possible to its citizens.

If healthcare is to be a right, it is only through increasing our capacity to provide healthcare that we can truly ensure that no citizen is ever allowed to turn back home without receiving the treatment they need and deserve.
