ED: A scientific approach to our traffic problem

The roads of Dhaka pose a very complex, logistical challenge

Dhaka city has more than its share of problems, and at the very top of the list, for most people, is traffic. For years, we have been strategizing about solving the traffic problem, but not much has been seen in terms of concrete results. Of course, ambitious infrastructural projects like the Metro Rail Project are in the pipeline, but even so, there are questions among the public as to what will truly happen to the city once the project is completed.

The fact is, we need a clear picture of the problem. To that end, it is good to see that the Accident Research Institute of BUET has partnered up with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police to conduct a traffic survey of Dhaka’s congested roads. This will, eventually, help experts come up with a solution. This kind of rigorous and scientific approach is what we need, instead of ad hoc ideas from politicians. Indeed, a survey should have been conducted much sooner.

The roads of Dhaka pose a very complex, logistical challenge. A variety of vehicles ply our roads: From private cars, to buses, to rickshaws, a comprehensive study of our traffic must take all of these vehicles into account. Dhaka is a city that is extremely densely populated. In fact, our population density is not sustainable. So, it must be kept in mind that no matter how hard we try to fix our traffic problem through surveys, studies, and planning, in the long run, we simply must decentralize our facilities into other cities throughout the country.

This survey is, however, a major step towards clearly and logically approaching a chaotic beast of a problem that frustrates Dhaka residents on a daily basis. Let us hope it bears fruit.
