ED: Development need not be at odds with conservation

It would be wise for the authorities concerned to pay heed to the words of the experts who have rightfully voiced concern over Bangladesh's protected areas, and general conservation efforts, falling prey to unplanned development activities.

As has been said time and time again, there is more to a country's progress than just GDP growth numbers. For Bangladesh, a land of rich rivers, forests, and other ecosystems boasting a rich and varied biodiversity, it is important for its conservation efforts to remain on track.

To that end, Bangladesh must do better in protecting its native flora and fauna. For example, the Chittagong Hill Tract region is a major component of Bangladesh's wildlife, and yet, in recent times, the animals in the region are threatened with extinction as a result of commercial activities, poaching, and overall habitat destruction.

Bangladesh's development journey will continue, and we are on the cusp of significant economic landmarks. It is also true that the government has to make some tough decisions, as any significant infrastructure project will result in environmental consequences.

However, unchecked development, which occurs at the cost of conservation efforts being minimized, and the loss of precious ecosystems and biodiversity, is not the sustainable model of development that Bangladesh has ever subscribed to.

Moving forward, there must be a concerted effort, from not just the relevant authorities but also the people at large, who have to recognize the importance of preserving Bangladesh's unique and rich biodiversity. Development and conservation must go hand in hand, and not be at odds with one another.
