Suma Biswas used to play cricket and kho kho while Sohel Rana had played football in local league before starting archery and it paid off as both the archers won gold medals at the 13th SA Games
Suma Biswas used to play cricket and kho kho until her college life but stopped playing both to give full concentration to archery and it paid off after winning her maiden gold medal at the 13th SAG. Same happened for Sohel Rana who used to play football in local league
"I used to play kho kho and almost got into the national team. I also played cricket until I was in college. But after taking archery seriously I stopped playing both because one has to give full concentration." said Suma after winning gold in women's individual compound gold yesterday.
Suma also had to skip the Asian Archery Championship at the end of last month due to exam. "The degree final examination was held over last two and half months. I had a flight for Bangkok to take part in the Asian Championship but I had to skip the competition for the exam. My exam finished on December 2 and we arrived in Nepal the following day."
It was though her elder brother and archery coach Anwar Hossain from whom Suma took first lessons of bow and arrow in 2009. She won only a single title in team event in the national competition.
Sohel Rana, who won three gold at SAG2019, got a job in Bangladesh Army for playing archery. Before that he was a footballer at his hometown in Chapainawabganj.
"I used to play football in local league of Chapainababganj. I was a striker. The bow and arrow attracted me. I started loving this game of archery." said Sohel.
Another hattrick gold-medalist, Ety, who escaped early marriage to become a archer received huge from her family after winning a couple of gold Sunday. "I talked to my father. He became very happy. Even my school teacher called me. Now my parents don't want me to marry. They now want me to be a big girl."
