Theatre presents the Munier Chowdhury Award and Mohammad Zakaria Memorial Award. This year, the leading Bangladeshi theatre troupe honoured Keramot Mowla, a powerful actor who has a 60-year long, illustrious career in stage, TV, and cinema, with the Munier Chowdhury Award, and Abhijit Sengupta, an acclaimed stage director and theatre organiser from Chittagong, with the Mohammad Zakaria Memorial Award.

Marking the 81st death anniversary of Munier Chowdhury, the awards were conferred to the recipients at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, on Sunday.

Dr Golam Murshid handed over the awards to the recipients, while Shah A Sarwar, the managing director of IFIC Bank Limited, handed over the pay cheques. Presided by Ferdousi Majumder, the president of Theatre, the ceremony began with a welcome speech delivered by Ramendu Majumder, the director of Theatre.

Sponsored by IFIC Bank Limited, the award covers prize money worth Tk50,000 for the Munier Chowdhury Award, and Tk25,000 for the Mohammad Zakaria Memorial Award. The Munier Chowdhury Award in 1989, and the Muhammad Zakaria Memorial Award in 1997, were initiated by Theatre.

In the second session of the ceremony, Bangshodhar, a play by Munier Chowdhury, was staged by the students of the Abdullah-al-Mamun Theatre School. Shekanul Islam Shahi directed the play.
