How can you not get pumped up to watch Frank Castle take on the CIA and Homeland Security in the most raw and brutal way possible while Metallica is playing in the background? After losing his family, murdered in a covert operation, it’s up to The Punisher to take revenge the best way he knows how.
The trailer itself is quite different from what we’ve seen in the other Marvel shows on Netflix. Stylistically, it breaks out of the mould from what we’ve seen from those involved in The Defenders. The thirteen episodes in the first season are going to be less superhero and superpowers, and more Jon Bernthal channelling Rambo in the urban jungle.
The comic book character and his story are a far departure from that of Daredevil and crew. As realistic as the team at Marvel and Netflix want to portray their TV universe, there’s always a hint of mythological and supernatural elements. Netflix also gives the source material a license to thrill through adult themes and content. Now, that doesn’t mean there will be a gratuitous amount of nudity or sex, but do expect pints and pints of blood and violence.
Frank Castle (Bernthal) first made his appearance in the Marvel television universe in season two of Daredevil. The impact was immediate, and it was received well by the audience and critics alike. Castle’s battle and eventual team-up with Daredevil was a promising look into what the first season will have to offer in The Punisher.
This is also a good sign in the sense that the horrid taste for Iron Fist still lingers in the mouths of regular viewers and hard-core fans. And even though The Defenders feared slightly better, people have been wanting the Marvel Netflix shows to continue the success of Daredevil season one and two, alongside the first half of Luke Cage. Jessica Jones also received a warm welcome, yet it may not have garnered the same attention as the others.
Now trending in the top 10 worldwide on YouTube, The Punisher we’ll be expecting to see in the upcoming season will be an unapologetic, blunt instrument that leaves a blood bath in his trails. Watch the trailer for yourself, if you haven’t already, and listen to that natural, guttural roar from Jon Bernthal as he lays waste to his enemies with military-grade weapons.
The first season will probably be released on Netflix near the end of the year or possibly a little earlier. The team at Netflix and Marvel have been very tight-lipped about the exact launch date, even so after so close to its eventual release which has been scheduled for this year.
Reports suggest a December release since Marvel’s cinematic universe will have Thor: Ragnarok open in November. Then again, you also have to consider Star Wars: The Last Jedi releasing in December. The parent company of both Marvel and Lucasfilm (Star Wars saga) happens to be Disney. We’ll have to wait and watch how they strategically release each franchise in the ending months of the year.
