The Jason Bourne star has never stuck to a plain and simple path through his Hollywood career. Damon has the ability to star in a summer blockbuster, as well as dive into a thought provoking drama. The new film titled Charlatan will see Damon take on the role of a con-man doctor, John R Brinkley.
After leading two films that debuted through this year’s autumn film festivals, with Suburbicon and Downsizing, the new independent film revolves around a man from a 2008 non-fiction book, Charlatan: America’s Most Dangerous Huckster, the Man Who Pursued Him, and The Age of Flimflam, written by Pope Brock.
Back in Kansas in 1918, Brinkley started a clinic in the hopes and promises of restoring male virility, alongside curing other ailments, by using a ridiculous method of surgery that involved implantation of goat testicles. Yes, you read that correctly. The scheme, of course, made him rich until he was accused with the deaths of several of his patients from botched operations.
The new project happens to be another collaboration between Damon and producer Kimberly Steward, who worked together on the Oscar-nominated drama Manchester by the Sea. The screenplay will be adapted by the writing team of Brian Koppelman and David Levien, writers behind Ocean’s Thirteen and Showtime’s Billions.
