Jessia: Social media lost its sole purpose
Miss World 2017 contestant Jessia Islam talks about her future plans and initiative for her country during the Head-to-Head challenge against the contestants from Brazil, South Africa, Canada, Ethiopia and Botswana, all competing in group six. The episode was shot at the Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, situated in Hengqin, Zhuhai in China. During their introduction video uploaded on the competition’s official Youtube channel, the participants were asked about their future plans, where Jessia said she wishes to play a pivotal role in the establishment of equal rights. Hence during the challenge, Jessia was asked to stretch on her plan for the empowerment of women. She said that she wants “to build an institution for females” where they could be trained to develop their job skills, through which, they could become self-reliant and confident; therefore ensure basic education for women. She wants to focus on establishing the institution in remote areas of Bangladesh because, according to her, while women in urban areas benefit with opportunities to work, women in rural areas are most neglected. The moderator was impressed with Jessia’s response and praised her for initiative. In the last part of the challenge, the six contestants were also asked about their thoughts on the impact and consequences of social media. While she agrees with the positive and negative impacts of social media, Jessia responded: “According to me, it (social media) lost its sole purpose. Rather than bringing people together, it’s sending them away. Also, it’s creating fake news, an illusion which is not there.” The allocation of competitors in their groups for the Head-to-Head challenge was randomly determined through a draw. This category has been added to the Miss World competition for the first time. The results from this challenge will select 40 contestants, who will be considered the “final 40.” The main competition for Miss World 2017 will begin in November, and the grand finale will be held on November 18 at Sanya City Arena in China, where the current Miss World title holder, Puerto Rico’s Stephanie Del Valle will crown her successor.
