Wahid Ibn Reza: ‘Surviving 71’ will be a hand-drawn 2D animated movie
Wahid Ibn Reza, who has made a name for himself in the Hollywood by working with the industry’s superheroes as a VFX artist, is going to make an animated film on Bangladesh’s Liberation War. He is currently working as associate production manager for the visual effects team at Hollywood’s renowned animation production company Sony Pictures Imageworks. During a conversation with the Dhaka Tribune’s Showtime, the internationally acclaimed artist said the film — dubbed as “Surviving 71” – would be a hand-drawn 2D animated movie. He said Shariful Islam, an award winning artist currently working at Grey Dhaka, would be working as the project’s production designer. The film revolves around two friends: Dhrubo and Akku. One is Hindu and the other is Muslim. Wahid, the writer, director and executive producer of the project, said: “It’s a story of their survival during the war and the journey they go through.” “We have broken it into couple of trailers and a short film as our first few steps into the production.” The scripts for the short film and the trailers were already prepared, he said, adding that the story for the feature is shaping up nicely, and they have officially started on the artwork as well. Wahid explained that he would be making the short film centring on this plot, which he hopes will finish by the end of the next year. The feature version of the film is expected to be completed 2019-20. “The film is going to be co-produced. When the film will be released depends on funding and co-producing opportunity,” he added. Some real life experience of his father Rezaul Karim, a freedom fighter, academician, and former minister, will be portrayed in the feature version. A student at Mymensingh Teachers’ Training College during the war in 1971, Rezaul was arrested and picked up from there by Pakistani forces. Wahid in a recent Facebook post also said this story would be incorporated in the feature film. As the film will feature real life experience of his father, he hopes that his team would be able to fairly portray the sacrifices men and women of Bangladesh made during the nine-month long war. Wahid joined Bardel Entertainment’s animation studio after his graduation and had worked there for a few years. He later joined the famous Moving Picture Company (MPC) as project coordinator and worked for the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice project. The artist has also worked for Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” (2016) and “Doctor Strange” (2016) during his tenure in the Method VFX Studios. Wahid worked with visual effects teams of Hollywood’s “Furious 7” (2015), “Fifty Shades of Grey” (2015), “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” (2014) and HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” In May this year, he gave an interview to the Showtime soon after “Doctor Strange” was nominated for the Academy Awards for the best VFX. The nomination made him a part of an Oscar nominated team.
