Rajput group threatens to cut off Deepika Padukone's nose over 'Padmavati'
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's impending “Padmavati” has already inflamed a rage among the Rajput community in India as the film allegedly distorted the depiction of its main character. Ever since the Rajput alleged that the film portrays an “amorous relationship” between Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji, played by Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, respectively, and disrespects the sentiments of the community. However, Bhansali and his team dismissed the claims on several occasions. The allegation prompted an instant outburst among several Rajput groups, including Karni Sena (Karni Army). The demonstration even took a violent turn earlier this year when members of Rajput Karni Sena disrupted the film's shooting in Jaipur. Threats have also been made to halt the release of the film. Issuing a fresh threat on Thursday in a video, Karni Sena member Mahipal Singh Makrana said: "Rajputs never raise a hand on women. But we will do what Lakshman did to Shurpanakha to Deepika if needed." The threat referred to Valmiki's ancient Indian epic poem 'Ramayana', where Lakshmana, younger brother of Prince Rama of Ayodhya, cut off the nose of Shurpanakha, sister of the main antagonist, King of Lanka Ravana. Meanwhile, Karni Sena chief Lokendra Singh Kalvi, who called for nationwide strike a few days back over the issue, said they will call for another strike again on the day of the film's release, December 1. "We will gather in lakh. Our ancestors wrote history with blood, we will not let anyone blacken it,” he said. Based on the legend of Rani Padmini, a legendary Hindu Rajput queen, mentioned in Avadhi language epic poem Padmavat by Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi in 1540, “Padmavati” is set in medieval Rajasthan. In the film, queen Padmavati is married to a noble king and they live in a prosperous fortress with their subjects until an ambitious Sultan hears of Padmavati's beauty and forms an obsessive love for the Queen of Mewar. According to Padmavat, Khilji, the said ambitious Sultan, led the invasion motivated by his desire to capture Rani Padmini. Padmini is said to have committed Jauhar (self-immolation) along with all the other women of the city to protect their honour. The men of the city stormed out in a final mortal sally to kill as many of the enemy before falling. Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Bhansali Productions present “Padmavati,” directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and produced by Bhansali, Sudhanshu Vats and Ajit Andhare.
