‘Padmavati’ won’t be released in UK despite getting clearance
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's latest release, “Padmavati,” which has stirred up a massive backlash and controversy in India, will not be screening in the UK despite receiving clearance from the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The producers of the film have reportedly refused to screen the film in the UK before it has been cleared in India. Starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in the lead, BBFC has cleared the film without any cuts, with a 12A rating - making it mandatory for a child below 12 to be accompanied by an adult during screening. Following the clearance, the Rajput Samaj, based in UK, have launched a boycott against the release of the film. The Samaj has also reportedly written to BBFC to revoke its certification and prevent its release in Britain too. According to latest reports published in the Guardian, the president of the Rajput Samaj of UK, Mahendrasinh Jadeja, said that the film “Padmavati” distorts their history, culture, and traditions. Since it has been boycotted by many states in India, the filmmakers have been trying to use a clever approach of getting the film released in the UK. Although the makers have already reportedly stated that the film will release in the UK in-line with the Indian release, Jadeja told Guardian that they cannot trust them (makers) anymore as they have broken many reassurances in the past. The British Board is yet to comment on the Rajput Samaj’s boycott appeal. The BBC reported on Friday that a body had been found hanging outside a fort in Rajasthan, along with a warning note mentioning the film that read: “We don’t burn effigies, we hang.” According to historians, there is little evidence that Padmini, also known as Padmavati, (played by Deepika Padukone in the film) truly existed, yet she has attained huge symbolic importance among the Rajputs. Bhansali has repeatedly clarified that the film contains no love scenes and has tried to dampen the outrage by working with activists to cut parts of the film that may be controversial. Padukone told the Guardian this week that the threats and bounties against her life are “absolutely appalling.” “What have we gotten ourselves into? And where have we reached as a nation?” she said. The actor, who recently starred alongside Vin Diesel in “XxX: The Return of Xander Cage,” has reportedly cancelled an event this weekend with Ivanka Trump as a result of the controversy and death threats. The first daughter is set to visit India to speak at a business summit in Hyderabad, India where Padukone was supposed to meet her.
