'Padmavati' to become 'Padmavat'
After inflaming a rage among the Rajput community in India by allegedly distorting the depiction of Rani Padmavati, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s impending film on the titular character is finally set to get the nod from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBCF). According to sources, CBCF had a meeting of the examining committee on December 28 and decided to give the film get a U/A certificate - Parental Guidance for children below the age of 12 years - under the condition of implementing 26 cuts in the film. The board also suggested the film with a change in the title to “Padmavat,” owing to the fact that the film is inspired from the Avadhi language epic poem “Padmavat” by Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi. "The film was approached with balanced view keeping in mind both the filmmakers and society. Considering complexities and concerns around the film, the requirement for a special panel was felt by CBFC to add perspective to the final decision," an official of the censor board said to NDTV. The reviewer team for the film, comprising of both board members and veteran historians, also asked the makers to add a disclaimer stating that the film does not glorify the banned practice of Sati. Relevant changes to the song “Ghoomar” was also on the suggestion list of the board. "Panel member had insights and also some reservations regarding claimed historical events and socio-cultural aspects which were duly discussed at length," NDTV reports quoting the board officials. However, when asked for a comment by a local press, the “Padmavati” team said that they are yet to receive an official communication in this regard. The Rs190 crore budgeted film, “Padmavati,” is an Indian epic period drama film. Deepika Padukone helms the titular role, alongside Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Sultan Alauddin Khilji, with Aditi Rao Hydari and Jim Sarbh in supporting roles.
